Which certified translator do you need in Paris?
For documents submitted to a Paris or Île-de-France prefecture, mairie, university or naturalisation office, use a translator registered as a judicial expert with a French court of appeal. A British or American professional certification does not meet this French sworn-translation requirement. You can order online and receive the signed PDF without attending an office in Paris.

Does a UK or US certified translator count in France?
French authorities use a specific legal category: the traducteur assermenté, also described as an expert traducteur-interprète près d’une cour d’appel. The person appears on a French judicial expert list and links the translation to the source with a stamp, signature and certification wording. A translator who is certified by a professional association in Britain or the United States may be highly qualified, yet that credential alone has no standing when a French authority expressly asks for a sworn translation.
This is the most common misunderstanding for English-speaking residents. A certificate accepted by a British employer, university or solicitor was created for a different system. Uploading it to the Paris Police Prefecture does not turn it into a French sworn translation. Read the document request for phrases such as traduction assermentée, traduction effectuée par un expert près d’une cour d’appel or traduction certifiée conforme. Copy the exact wording into your order notes.
The translator does not have to sit in the same arrondissement as you. A judicial expert registered with a French court of appeal can issue translations used throughout France, subject to the receiving authority’s instructions. The Paris Court of Appeal is a familiar local reference, but an online order avoids restricting the search to a nearby office or waiting for a face-to-face appointment.
| Credential | How it is established | Use for a French authority |
|---|---|---|
| French sworn translator | Registration as a judicial expert with a French court of appeal | Meets a request for a traduction assermentée, subject to the recipient’s file rules |
| UK professional certification | Translator statement or professional-body practice | Does not replace French court-appointed status |
| US certified translation | Translator or agency certification for an English-language recipient | Does not replace French court-appointed status |
| Bilingual friend or colleague | No official translation status | Unsuitable where the authority asks for a sworn translation |
Where are translated documents submitted in Île-de-France?
Paris is only one administrative destination within the region. Your file may go to the Paris Police Prefecture, a departmental prefecture in Nanterre, Bobigny, Créteil, Évry-Courcouronnes, Versailles, Cergy or Melun, a mairie, a university admissions office or a professional regulator. Use the name shown on your appointment notice or online portal. Each recipient controls its own list of documents, validity periods and paper-copy rules.
Residence-permit applications often involve a birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce judgment, police record or proof of family relationship issued abroad. Civil-status procedures at a mairie may require a full-form certificate rather than the shorter extract you already have. A university may ask for both a diploma and academic transcript. Translation begins after you have identified the record the recipient actually requests.
Do not crop the source to the line that seems relevant. French civil servants compare names, dates, registry references, stamps and marginal notes across the file. Send every page and every side carrying information. If a seal is faint, include a clearer scan or photograph as a second reference. The translator can mark genuinely illegible content, but cannot reconstruct wording missing from the image.
What should an expatriate prepare for a residence-permit file?
Start with the current checklist for your exact residence category. A salarié file, family-member file, visitor application and renewal can ask for different evidence. Note the destination prefecture, the procedure and any deadline in the order. If the portal limits file size, retain the full-resolution source for translation and create the compressed submission copy only after checking that names, stamps and certification remain readable.
Name consistency deserves a separate check. British and Irish certificates may show middle names that were omitted from a French record. US documents may use a suffix, maiden name or state-specific format. Give the translator a passport or existing residence card as a spelling reference, clearly labelled as reference material. The translation must reproduce the source while allowing the reader to understand documented variants.
An apostille may authenticate the signature or seal on a foreign public document when the procedure calls for one. It does not translate the document: every word remains in the original language. When both formalities are required, obtain the apostille first and upload it with the record so its text, stamp and attachment can be covered in the French translation.
What changed for French naturalisation in 2026?
Since 1 January 2026, French naturalisation requires B2 French, replacing the former B1 threshold, and an official language test is compulsory. The test result and the sworn translations serve different purposes. The B2 evidence demonstrates French ability. The translation makes a foreign birth, marriage, divorce, criminal-record or academic document readable and formally usable in the naturalisation file.
Timing matters. Some records must be recent when the application is submitted, so translating an old criminal-record certificate months in advance may waste money. Group the file into records that can be translated now and records that must be reissued closer to the appointment. Only the relevant administration can confirm its freshness rule. The translator handles language and certification, not the administrative validity period.
Translatorus had processed 4,866 orders as of July 30, 2026 and held a 4.9/5 Trustpilot score from over 940 reviews. These figures describe the online service. Acceptance of a particular document remains the decision of the Paris or Île-de-France authority receiving it.
How does an online Paris translation order work?
1. Name the French recipient
State the prefecture, mairie, university, court or employer and the purpose of the file.
2. Upload the full source
Include all pages, reverse-side text, apostilles, stamps, seals and attachments in reading order.
3. Add spelling references
Attach a passport or residence card separately when it helps keep names consistent.
4. Choose the delivery time
Standard 48h is included. Fast 24h adds €15 and Express 12h adds €30.
5. Confirm paper requirements
Use the signed PDF when accepted, or add postal delivery for €8 when the recipient needs paper.
After delivery, compare the translated names, dates, places and document numbers with the source. Report any query by page and field. Do not edit the certified PDF yourself, because an alteration breaks the connection between the translator’s signed certification and the delivered text. Keep the source, translation and certification together when uploading or attending the appointment.
How much does English-French sworn translation cost?
The checked Translatorus rate is €36 per page including VAT for English to French and €36 per page including VAT for French to English. The rate is checked in each direction because pricing can vary by source and target language. A Paris address does not add a local charge. Standard 48h and the signed PDF are included.
| Example order | Explicit calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 page, Standard 48h | 1 × €36 | €36 |
| 2 pages, Fast 24h | 2 × €36 = €72; €72 + €15 | €87 |
| 3 pages, Express 12h | 3 × €36 = €108; €108 + €30 | €138 |
| 2 pages, Standard 48h plus post | 2 × €36 = €72; €72 + €8 | €80 |
| 4 pages, Fast 24h plus post | 4 × €36 = €144; €144 + €15 + €8 | €167 |
For a two-page birth certificate plus a one-page marriage certificate, the source count is 2 + 1 = 3 pages. Standard delivery costs 3 × €36 = €108. Fast delivery costs €108 + €15 = €123. If the same Fast order also needs a paper copy, the complete calculation is €108 + €15 + €8 = €131. The timing and postage supplements apply once to the order.
