The identity page of a passport holds everything a bank, a solicitor or an official body must check: identity, nationality, document number and validity. When the passport is written in another language or script, these bodies usually ask for a certified translation to place in the file.
Banks, property and authorities: when it is requested
A bank opening an account for a foreign customer, a solicitor acting for a non-resident buyer, or a mortgage lender asks for the translated identity page to meet its checks. The Home Office (UKVI) may ask for it to complete a visa file, a university for an enrolment, a register office for a marriage. Abroad, a British or American passport sometimes needs translating for a residence application, an employment contract or a property purchase, especially in countries that do not use the Latin alphabet. Visa pages and entry stamps then serve to prove dates of stay.
What the translation of a passport restores
The identity page is translated field by field: document type, country code, number, surname, given names, nationality, date and place of birth, sex, dates of issue and expiry, issuing authority. The machine-readable zone at the foot is not translated; it is noted as printed. Names in Arabic, Cyrillic or Chinese are transliterated following the Latin form already printed in the passport. On request, visa pages, stuck-in residence permits and entry and exit stamps are translated with their dates and places. The translator adds a certification statement and a stamp on each page.
Taking the right photo
Photograph the whole identity page, including the bottom strip, flat, with no finger on the edges and no glare on the protective film. A cut-off or blurred page forces the translator to mark a passage as illegible. Do not send the cover or blank pages. An expired passport can still be translated, which is useful for a civil-status procedure or an estate, but an authority will not treat it as valid identification.
Price and turnaround
The identity page is one page of translation, at €30. Each extra visa or stamp page adds one page; correct the number in the form if you upload two photos of the same page. Delivery by e-mail takes 24 to 48 hours, or 24 hours with Fast 24h (+€15) and 12 hours with Express 12h (+€30), handy for a signing the next day. Banks generally accept the PDF. For a counter that wants paper, add PDF + original by post, tracked, for €8.
A tip for consistency
If your file also contains a translated birth certificate or ID card, order them with the passport. The translator will align the spelling of your names, which banks and immigration offices check closely.

Which authority accepts this translation?
Banks, solicitors and the Home Office ask for it when opening an account, buying property or applying for leave to remain; in the United States, USCIS and banks require it. A certified translation from one of our sworn translators is accepted by all these bodies.
How many pages of the passport need translating?
Only the identity page bearing your photo and personal details is translated in the vast majority of cases, which counts as a single page of translation. If the authority also asks for a specific visa or stamp page, let us know when you order.
Do I need to send the original passport, or is a photo enough?
A clear photo of the identity page is more than enough — sending the original passport is never necessary for the translation. You keep your passport with you for the whole time it's being processed.
Does a damaged passport or an older format cause any problems?
A worn, creased passport or one with an older-style photo page can still be translated as long as the text is legible in the photo you send us. If you're unsure whether something is readable, contact us before ordering so we can confirm the photo is usable.
