A birth certificate is the civil record most often asked for in immigration, family and school files. When it is written in a language the receiving office does not read, it usually has to come with a certified translation carrying the translator's signature and stamp. Where a translated birth certificate is needed
The Home Office (UKVI) generally asks for a certified translation of any foreign document in a visa, settlement or citizenship application. The General Register Office or your local register office may ask for one when you register a marriage, or record a birth that happened abroad. In the United States, USCIS expects a full English translation with a certification statement for every foreign-language document in a filing. Universities, schools and employers sometimes ask for it too.
What the translation includes
The translator reproduces the whole certificate: register heading, entry number, date, time and place of birth, the child's names, the parents' details, the informant and the registrar. Marginal notes added later, such as a recognition of paternity, an adoption or a change of name, are translated as well, because officials often look for them first. Stamps, seals and signatures are described in square brackets rather than copied. Names follow the spelling in your passport, and the layout follows the original.
What to send and what to avoid
Photograph the certificate flat, with no finger or glare over the seals. Check the back: an apostille or legalisation is often stamped there and must be translated with the document. Make sure you hold the right type of record. Many offices want the full certificate showing both parents, not a short extract. A faded or handwritten older certificate can still be translated; mention it in the Additional information field.

Check the issue date, because some offices refuse a certificate older than three months, and a translation does not make it newer. Which authority accepts this translation?

How many pages does a birth certificate usually run to?
Most birth certificates fit on a single side of paper. Some countries, such as Morocco or Algeria, issue multilingual extracts spread over two pages, which still falls within the standard rate as long as the translated content doesn't exceed one page.
Do I need to send the original certificate, or is a photo enough?
A clear photo or scan is more than enough — the paper original is never required for the translation. If you need the original returned by post stapled to the certified translation, that option is available for an extra €8.
What if the certificate includes marginal notes (marriage, divorce)?
Marginal notes added after the certificate was first issued, such as a marriage or divorce, are translated in full at the same rate. Just mention it when you place your order so the translator can factor them in without extending the turnaround time.
