Romanian official translation often separates the translator’s Ministry of Justice authorisation from a notary’s legalisation of the signature. For documents used in France or Britain, the receiving country applies a different certification system.

What is a Romanian certified translator?

In Romania, a traducător autorizat is authorised by the Romanian Ministry of Justice for specific languages, and many official procedures also require a notary to legalise the translator’s signature. French administrative use calls for an expert on a French court-of-appeal list when sworn translation is requested. British recipients use professional certification under a third system.

What does traducător autorizat mean in Romania?

Traducător autorizat means authorised translator. The Romanian Ministry of Justice grants the authorisation for named language combinations. The status is used for work connected with Romanian courts, notaries, public bodies and other official procedures. Check the translator’s authorisation and languages rather than relying on a general website label such as certified Romanian translator.

Authorisation belongs to the translator. Notarial legalisation is a second act. Where it is required, a Romanian notary verifies and legalises the authorised translator’s signature on the translation. The notary does not retranslate the document or certify that every technical term is correct. A request for traducere legalizată therefore involves more than the translator’s stamp.

This distinction is easy to miss for Romanians who have lived abroad for years. A Romanian institution may say traducere autorizată, traducere legalizată or ask for an authorised translation followed by legalisation. Those phrases should be confirmed before ordering. Paying for a notarial step that the office does not require adds cost and time; omitting one that it does require can stop the file.

Translator authorisation

The Romanian Ministry of Justice authorises the translator for stated languages.

Notarial legalisation

A Romanian notary may separately legalise the authorised translator’s signature.

French sworn status

French authorities use judicial experts registered with a French court of appeal.

British certification

British institutions normally request a professional accuracy statement with translator details.

When is notarial legalisation added in Romania?

The Romanian recipient decides. Notarial, civil-status, court, education or company procedures can use different wording and may impose their own document chain. Ask whether the office accepts an authorised translation alone or requires legalisation of the translator’s signature. If an original or certified copy must be shown to the notary, establish that before sending only a scan.

Legalisation of the translator’s signature is also distinct from an apostille. The legalisation confirms the signature in the Romanian notarial process. An apostille authenticates the origin of a public document for foreign use where the Hague Convention and the procedure require it. Neither operation translates the underlying record.

The sequence can matter. If the destination asks for an apostilled Romanian certificate and a French translation, obtain the apostille first so its Romanian, French or multilingual text is visible in the source set. If a Romanian notary is legalising a translation into Romanian, follow that notary’s document and signature procedure. One standard workflow cannot cover both destinations.

Which Romanian translation is valid for French administration?

A Romanian Ministry of Justice authorisation is official in Romania. It does not put the translator on a French judicial-expert list. When a prefecture, mairie, French court, university or notaire asks for a traduction assermentée, use a translator registered as an expert with a French court of appeal. The translation should carry that expert’s French certification, signature and stamp.

Romanians living in France frequently submit birth certificates, marriage records, divorce judgments, criminal-record certificates, diplomas and employment evidence. Begin with the current checklist for the exact procedure. A residence renewal, marriage file and naturalisation application have different evidence and recency rules. Translation should follow the selection of the correct source record.

Since 1 January 2026, French naturalisation requires B2 French and a compulsory official language test, replacing the earlier B1 threshold. A French sworn translation of a Romanian diploma can make the document usable in the file, but it does not itself prove the new language level unless the authority’s rules accept that separate evidence for a defined purpose.

What certification do Romanian documents need in Britain?

The United Kingdom has no official national register of certified or sworn translators. For many Home Office and institutional procedures, a professional translator signs a statement that the translation is true and accurate and supplies the date, name, signature and contact details. Always read the latest checklist for the particular route or institution.

A Romanian notarised translation can be useful evidence of a formal process, but it does not automatically replace the British recipient’s requested English certification. Likewise, a British professional certificate has no value as French sworn status. Romanians moving between Britain and France should prepare each translation for the authority that will actually receive it.

Romanian citizens form one of Europe’s largest mobile communities, with substantial populations in both Britain and France. Long residence histories produce mixed files: a Romanian birth act, British employment letter, French marriage record and certificates issued to children abroad. Sort documents by destination and source language before asking for a single quote.

Which Romanian documents need extra care?

Romanian civil-status records can be issued as certificates or extracts and may carry later annotations. Upload both sides and any attached multilingual standard form. Older records may use administrative divisions or place names that have changed. Keep the official wording and registry references visible so the translated act can be connected to the source.

Names require attention to ă, â, î, ș and ț. Earlier passports and foreign databases sometimes show cedilla forms, omit diacritics or use another surname order. Supply the identity document used in the destination procedure as a reference. The translator should retain the Romanian source spelling while accounting for a documented passport form when the certification format allows it.

Court records may need a finality certificate or complete operative decision. Diplomas need their transcript pages when requested, with grades and qualification titles left in the Romanian system. Translation does not decide whether a licență, master or professional qualification equals a named British or French award. Recognition belongs to the receiving university, employer or competent body.

Can an EU multilingual form remove the translation requirement?

EU Regulation 2016/1191 simplifies circulation of certain public documents between member states and provides multilingual standard forms for defined categories. A form can reduce translation needs when the document and procedure fall within the regulation. It does not cover every certificate, every annotation or every administrative purpose.

Ask the French or Romanian recipient whether the multilingual form is sufficient. Inspect marginal notes and attachments separately because they may remain only in Romanian. Britain’s departure from the EU also means the same assumption should not be carried into a British procedure. Recipient instructions settle the point.

Translatorus recorded 4,866 processed orders by July 30, 2026. Its 4.9/5 Trustpilot rating drew on more than 940 reviews. The Romanian notary, French authority or British institution remains responsible for formal acceptance.
