Which certified Ukrainian translator is valid in France?
For Ukrainian documents submitted to the French administration, use an expert translator appearing on a French court-of-appeal list when the authority requests a traduction assermentée. A version prepared for Germany, Poland, Britain or Ukraine may carry another certification and another spelling of the name. Send the original script, every page and the identity document used in France.

Why do Ukrainian document files differ across Europe?
Around 4.4 million Ukrainians hold temporary protection in the European Union. The distribution is uneven: about 1.29 million are in Germany, 961,000 in Poland and 49,340 in France. Many families reached France after first registering, studying, working or receiving documents in another European country. Their paperwork can therefore contain several languages and certification formats.
A Polish or German translation may have been correct for the office that requested it. A French prefecture applies French requirements when it asks for sworn translation. Existing translations are useful references, especially for names and official terminology, but they do not acquire French judicial-expert status simply because the holder later moves to France.
Temporary protection also generates practical documents that are separate from Ukrainian civil records: residence papers, school enrolment files, medical records, employment certificates and benefit decisions. Identify which authority issued each page and which French office will receive it. A bundle labelled Ukrainian may include Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, German or English text.
Family records
Birth, marriage, divorce and custody documents may come from different periods and registries.
Several scripts
Ukrainian and Russian Cyrillic, Latin transliterations and foreign translations can coexist in one file.
French destination
A French request for sworn translation points to a court-listed expert translator in France.
Identity reference
The passport or French residence document helps track accepted name spellings without rewriting the source.
Does certification from another country work in France?
France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine and Britain do not share one universal sworn-translator status. France uses experts registered with a court of appeal. Germany has sworn or authorised translators recorded under federal-state rules. Poland and Ukraine apply their own official arrangements. Britain has no statutory national register of certified translators and normally relies on a professional certification statement.
For a French prefecture, mairie, court, university or notaire, look for the wording traduction assermentée or expert près d’une cour d’appel. A British or American certificate has no value as French sworn status. The same is true of an official translation created under German, Polish or Ukrainian rules unless the translator also holds the French registration requested.
| Where the document will be used | What to verify | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| France | French court-of-appeal judicial-expert status | Submitting a translation certified only for another country |
| United Kingdom | Professional accuracy statement and recipient details | Assuming France’s sworn stamp answers a British checklist |
| Another EU country | That country’s current official-translation rules | Reusing a French version without checking the local language and status |
| Several countries | A separate route for each named recipient | Ordering one target language for every office |
A single translator can sometimes hold more than one appointment, but that should be checked rather than assumed. Write the French recipient and purpose in the order notes. If a second version is needed for Britain or another EU country, treat it as a separate destination with its own target language and certification wording.
How are Soviet-era Ukrainian records translated?
People born, married or educated before Ukrainian independence may hold certificates issued by the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic or another Soviet authority. The printed form can be Russian, Ukrainian or bilingual, while handwritten entries may use a different language from the headings. The document’s actual language must be identified page by page.
Soviet records often use place names, republic names and institutional titles that later changed. A translator should render the historical issuer shown on the document, rather than silently modernising it. A birth place recorded as the Ukrainian SSR remains a historical entry. Current geography can be supplied as a reference if the French procedure needs to connect the old wording with a modern identity record.
Old paper can contain faded stamps, carbon-copy handwriting and abbreviations. Photograph the page in even light and at full resolution. Include the cover, reverse and any later annotation. Where a word genuinely cannot be read, the translation should mark the limitation instead of guessing a likely patronymic or registry number.
What should you check on post-1991 Ukrainian documents?
Modern birth and marriage certificates, court decisions, criminal-record extracts, diplomas and digital records have changed format over time. QR codes or electronic verification data do not remove the need to translate visible text when the French recipient requests it. Keep issue dates, series numbers, registry references and electronic signatures readable.
For education, upload the diploma and supplement if the university or employer asks for both. Ukrainian grades, qualification titles and credit information should remain tied to their original system. The translator does not decide French equivalence. That assessment belongs to the receiving institution or recognition body.
Court and family records may need evidence that a decision became final. Ask whether the French authority needs the complete judgment, an extract or a separate finality certificate. A one-page operative section can omit the parties and procedural identifiers used to match the ruling with a birth or marriage record.
Why can a Ukrainian name have several Latin spellings?
Transliteration changes with the source language and system used. The Ukrainian surname Шевченко is transliterated from Ukrainian, while the same family name read through Russian can produce another Latin form in older records. A Polish, German, French or British database may also omit apostrophes, hyphens or diacritics. The result is several legitimate-looking spellings attached to one person.
Use the passport and current French residence document as spelling references, but do not ask the translator to erase the source form. The certified translation needs to remain faithful to the document. Where the format permits, a documented passport spelling can appear alongside the transliteration so the administration can connect the records.
Patronymics create another mismatch. A Ukrainian civil record may include a patronymic that a French card omits, while a child’s record connects the parent through that full form. Supply related documents together when identity linkage matters. Consistency comes from seeing the file, not from forcing every record into the shortest name.
Does a Ukrainian apostille replace the translation?
No. An apostille authenticates the public signature or seal for foreign use when the procedure requires it. The Ukrainian wording remains Ukrainian. If the French recipient asks for both formalities, obtain the apostille before translation where possible and upload the attached page so it is covered by the French sworn set.
Document access and authentication can be difficult for displaced families. Do not assume an alternative is acceptable because obtaining the usual record is hard. Ask the French authority or legal adviser what substitute, digital extract or later-produced certificate it will accept. The translator cannot waive an original-document or apostille rule.
By July 30, 2026, Translatorus had processed 4,866 orders; more than 940 Trustpilot reviewers rated it 4.9/5. The French administration still decides whether the source record, certification and delivery format meet the procedure.
How do Ukrainian families order translation online?
1. Name the French recipient
Specify the prefecture, mairie, school, university, court, notaire or other authority.
2. Upload the original script
Send the Ukrainian or Russian source alongside any German, Polish or English translation made earlier.
3. Add identity references
Attach the passport and French document separately to show the spellings already used in the file.
4. Include every formal page
Add reverse sides, Soviet covers, marginal notes, apostilles, QR panels and finality certificates.
5. Choose delivery
Standard 48h is part of the page rate. Fast 24h carries €15 extra, Express 12h carries €30 extra and a posted copy carries €8.
Review the delivered translation against the source and identity references. Focus on names, patronymics, dates, places, document series and registry numbers. Send any question by page and field. Changes to a certified PDF must be made by the translator so the signature continues to cover the final version.
How much is Ukrainian, English and French translation?
The page rates were checked with `getPricePerPage` in every direction. Ukrainian to English and English to Ukrainian each cost €36 per page. Ukrainian to French and French to Ukrainian also cost €36 per page. VAT, Standard 48h and the signed PDF are included. Authentication and public-document fees are separate.
| Direction and delivery | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 2 pages Ukrainian to French, Standard 48h | 2 × €36 | €72 |
| 3 pages French to Ukrainian, Fast 24h | 3 × €36 = €108; €108 + €15 | €123 |
| 1 page Ukrainian to English, Express 12h | 1 × €36 = €36; €36 + €30 | €66 |
| 4 pages English to Ukrainian, Standard plus post | 4 × €36 = €144; €144 + €8 | €152 |
| 5 pages Ukrainian to French, Express plus post | 5 × €36 = €180; €180 + €30 + €8 | €218 |
A French file with a one-page Soviet birth certificate and a two-page modern court extract contains 1 + 2 = 3 pages. Ukrainian or Russian source text into French at the checked base rate costs 3 × €36 = €108 on Standard. Express 12h plus a postal copy costs €108 + €30 + €8 = €146.
