Which German certified translator do you need?
For German documents submitted to the French administration, choose an expert translator listed by a French court of appeal when a traduction assermentée is required. A German beeidigter Übersetzer can be checked in the official justiz-dolmetscher.de database, but German registration does not confer French sworn status. The destination authority, rather than the German source language, determines the credential.

What is a beeidigter Übersetzer in Germany?
Beeidigter Übersetzer is the best-known German expression for a sworn translator. The exact title varies by federal state and may include ermächtigter Übersetzer, öffentlich bestellter Übersetzer or another legally defined wording. The translator has been sworn, authorised or publicly appointed under the rules that apply in the relevant Land and can certify translations for German official use.
Germany’s official database at justiz-dolmetscher.de brings together sworn, authorised and publicly appointed interpreters and translators. It contains roughly 24,800 registered professionals. A search can be narrowed by language, federal state and professional role. Check that the result covers written translation rather than interpreting alone, and that the required language appears in the entry.
The database solves a verification problem inside Germany. It does not create a Europe-wide licence. A translator listed for English and German in North Rhine-Westphalia has an official German status, but the listing says nothing about registration with a French court of appeal or the form required by a British university.
German register
Use justiz-dolmetscher.de to check the person, language, Land and type of official appointment.
French court list
For French sworn use, check registration as a judicial expert with a French court of appeal.
British certification
A British recipient usually checks the translator’s signed statement rather than a statutory national register.
One document, several uses
Separate versions or certification steps may be needed when the same record goes to more than one country.
Why is German sworn status insufficient for a French authority?
France attaches sworn translation to its own judicial-expert system. A prefecture, mairie, French court, notaire or university asking for a traduction assermentée expects a traducteur assermenté listed as an expert with a French court of appeal. German authorisation and French registration are different appointments made under different laws.
Accuracy is only half of the acceptance question. A German translator may render the text perfectly and use a valid German certification formula. The French recipient can still reject the document because the signer is absent from the relevant French judicial list. For a French file, check the French status before paying for a German-certified version.
A British or American translator’s certificate carries the same limitation for French use. Britain has no official national register of certified translators, while American certification practices belong to English-language recipients and professional bodies. Neither has legal effect as French court-appointed status. The French authority’s written request remains the useful starting point.
| Receiving country | Credential commonly relevant | Verification point |
|---|---|---|
| France | Judicial expert registered with a French court of appeal | French expert list and the authority’s wording |
| Germany | Sworn, authorised or publicly appointed translator under Land rules | justiz-dolmetscher.de entry for written translation and language |
| United Kingdom | Professional translator’s signed certification | Current requirements of the Home Office, university, solicitor or other recipient |
| Private cross-border business | Professional or official translation as agreed | Contractual purpose and any later public filing |
Which German documents are commonly used in France?
Civil-status files can include a Geburtsurkunde, Eheurkunde, Lebenspartnerschaftsurkunde or Sterbeurkunde. A Familienbuch or older family register may contain historical entries absent from a new certificate. Ask the French recipient which record and issue date it expects. Sending a familiar document title is less useful than sending the exact official version named in the checklist.
Residence and naturalisation procedures may also involve a Führungszeugnis, Meldebescheinigung, divorce judgment, employment evidence or academic record. Since 1 January 2026, French naturalisation requires B2 French with a compulsory official test, replacing the old B1 level. This test remains separate from the sworn translation of German supporting documents.
German compound terms tempt people to crop a form around the line they recognise. Keep the whole page. Registry references, issuing authority, certification clauses and later annotations can sit far from the main entry. If the reverse carries a multilingual legend or authentication, include that side too.
How should German names, places and qualifications be handled?
Umlauts and ß need a consistency check. A passport may show Müller, while an international booking or earlier database record shows Mueller. Neither spelling should be substituted casually. Provide the identity document used in the French procedure and label it as a reference. The translation reproduces the German source and can identify a documented variant where appropriate.
Place names can include a municipality, district and federal state that do not map neatly onto French administrative divisions. Keep the official place name visible and translate the type of authority where useful. A translator should not replace a German Kreis with a French département as if their legal functions were identical.
Academic documents need the original award title, institution, course names, grades and credit information. Translation does not grant French equivalence to an Ausbildung, Staatsexamen, Meister qualification or university degree. The university, employer or competent recognition body makes that decision after reading the translated evidence.
What if an English or French document is going to Germany?
Ask the German Standesamt, Ausländerbehörde, university, court or employer whether it requires a beglaubigte Übersetzung and which translator status it accepts. Local practice can affect original-document, paper-copy and certification requirements. A French sworn translation into German may not be the format the German office expects merely because it carries an official French stamp.
For civil-status work, confirm whether the German authority needs the original, a certified copy, an apostille or another authentication before translation. The apostille authenticates a public signature or seal. It does not replace the German translation. Obtaining it first, where required, allows the translator to include the apostille wording and attachment in the same certified set.
For a UK-issued document, the absence of a British statutory translator register does not mean any bilingual person can certify it for Germany. The German recipient controls acceptance. Search the official German database for the relevant language or obtain written confirmation if it proposes another route.
On July 30, 2026, the Translatorus counter stood at 4,866 processed orders. Its rating was 4.9/5 across more than 940 Trustpilot reviews. A French court list, German Land or British recipient still sets the formal status it will accept.

How much does German certified translation cost?
The prices were checked with `getPricePerPage` in every direction. German to English costs €36 per page, while English to German costs €42 per page. German to French costs €36 per page, while French to German costs €42 per page. The difference comes from the €42 destination surcharge when German is the target language. Prices include VAT and Standard 48h.
| Direction and option | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 page German to French, Standard 48h | 1 × €36 | €36 |
| 2 pages French to German, Fast 24h | 2 × €42 = €84; €84 + €15 | €99 |
| 3 pages German to English, Express 12h | 3 × €36 = €108; €108 + €30 | €138 |
| 2 pages English to German, Standard plus post | 2 × €42 = €84; €84 + €8 | €92 |
| 4 pages German to French, Fast plus post | 4 × €36 = €144; €144 + €15 + €8 | €167 |
A French file with a two-page German civil-status record and one-page police certificate contains 2 + 1 = 3 pages. German to French on Standard costs 3 × €36 = €108. Express 12h costs €108 + €30 = €138. If the same three pages are translated from French into German, the base becomes 3 × €42 = €126.
