Which I-864 supporting documents need English translation?

Any foreign-language financial document submitted with Form I-864 should be accompanied by a full certified English translation. This may include foreign bank statements, employment letters, tax assessments, pension records, or proof of asset ownership. Translate the complete record you intend to submit, including stamps, notes, tables, and reverse-side text, and attach the translator's signed certification.

What role does translated evidence play in an I-864 filing?

Form I-864 is the Affidavit of Support used in many family-based immigration cases and some employment-based cases. The sponsor provides the form and the financial evidence required by the current instructions. Much of the usual evidence, such as an IRS tax transcript, is already in English. Translation becomes relevant when the sponsor, household member, or intending immigrant submits a record issued in another language to document income, employment, an asset, or another financial fact.

The translation makes the submitted record readable. It does not decide whether the income can be counted, whether an asset is acceptable, or whether the sponsor meets the applicable requirement. Those questions depend on the form instructions and the facts of the case. Choose the evidence first, then translate the foreign-language items within that selected set. Sending an extra translated bank statement does not repair a missing document specifically requested by the instructions.

Foreign-language recordWhat the translation should preserveCheck before ordering
Bank statementAccount holder, bank, period, balances, currency, transaction labels, page numbersWhether statements are needed and which months are relevant
Employment letterEmployer identity, position, start date, pay, hours, signature, contact detailsWhether the income may continue from the same source
Foreign tax recordTaxpayer, tax year, income categories, tax authority, filing or assessment statusWhether the requested evidence calls for this record
Asset evidenceOwner, asset description, value, debt or lien, issue date, official referencesWhether the asset and supporting valuation fit the instructions

When do foreign bank statements need certified translation?

A foreign bank statement needs translation when you submit it as I-864 evidence and it contains information outside English. The translated pages should identify the financial institution, account holder, statement period, account or reference number as shown, opening and closing balances, currency, and any transaction descriptions relevant to the evidence. Headers and footers matter because they connect each page to the same account and reporting period.

Avoid sending a translation of one selected balance while the source packet contains several pages of untranslated account information. Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document submitted to USCIS requires a full English translation certified as complete and accurate by a translator competent to translate into English. If you submit only certain complete statements under the filing instructions, translate every page of those statements. Keep the source and translation in matching order.

Currencies should remain identified as currencies. A translator can render the labels and preserve the amount, but should not silently replace pesos, rupees, dinars, or euros with a US-dollar figure. If a separate conversion or valuation is part of your evidence, label it separately and retain its date and source. The certified translation cost per page guide explains how tables and statement pages are counted.

What should a translated foreign employment letter contain?

A foreign employment letter may be used to document current work or income when the case instructions and circumstances make it relevant. Its translation should preserve the employer's legal name, address, letterhead, employee name, job title, start date, employment status, compensation, pay frequency, hours if stated, and the signer's name and position. A stamp or handwritten signature should be labeled rather than omitted.

Pay language often causes avoidable ambiguity. A monthly gross salary, annual net salary, allowance, bonus, and reimbursement describe different items. The English version should follow the source instead of collapsing them into "salary." If the employer uses a local calendar or date format, the translation can state the English date while preserving the source meaning. Provide the sponsor's passport spelling so the employment letter matches the identity used in the immigration packet.

Translation cannot establish that foreign employment will continue after relocation. If continued income is part of the financial presentation, review the current I-864 instructions and supporting evidence requirements. The translated employment letter records the employer's statement. It does not add a prediction, legal conclusion, or explanation that the source employer never made.

How should a foreign tax return or assessment be translated?

Foreign tax systems use records that may not correspond neatly to a US federal income tax return. A document may be a self-filed return, an employer withholding certificate, a tax assessment, or an official income statement. The translation should name the document accurately and retain the issuing authority, taxpayer, tax year, income categories, declared amounts, assessed amounts, currency, status, and official annotations.

Do not relabel a foreign assessment as an "IRS transcript" or convert local tax categories into US tax concepts. A concise translator note can explain an untranslatable abbreviation, but the translation should not interpret tax eligibility. When a multi-page return includes schedules, translate the schedules you submit as part of the record. Missing pages can make totals difficult to trace even when the English on the first page is accurate.

The form instructions determine whether a sponsor needs a US tax transcript, a copy of a return, an explanation, or other evidence. A translated foreign tax record may supplement the chosen evidence in some cases, but it is not automatically a substitute for the specified US document. When the filing position is unclear, ask a qualified immigration attorney or accredited representative which financial records belong in the packet before paying to translate them.

Which foreign asset documents may require translation?

A sponsor relying on assets may submit foreign-language records about a deposit account, securities, real property, or another asset permitted by the current instructions. Translation scope can include ownership certificates, bank letters, valuation reports, mortgage balances, lien statements, or registry extracts. Each record should retain the owner's identity, asset description, valuation date, stated value, currency, debt, issuing party, and document reference.

Ownership and value often come from different records. A land-registry extract may identify the owner without stating a current market value. An appraisal may state a value while referring to the registry record. Translate each submitted document as its own source, then keep the related files labeled together. The translator should not combine two issuers' statements into one certificate or calculate net value unless a separate document in the packet shows that calculation.

Do household member and immigrant records follow the same rule?

Identity records can also appear when names differ across financial documents. A foreign marriage certificate, divorce decree, or legal name-change record may connect a former surname to the current filing identity. Translate that record completely if it is submitted. For marriage evidence used elsewhere in a family petition, see the Form I-130 marriage certificate guide.

What must the I-864 translator certification say?

The USCIS foundation is 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3). The English translation must be full, and the translator must certify that it is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate from the source language into English. The certification should identify the translator and be signed and dated. Printed text, handwriting, stamps, seals, tables, annotations, and text on a relevant reverse side remain within scope.

USCIS does not make notarization part of that federal translation rule. An apostille authenticates a public document for use under a separate process; it does not replace the English translation. Order either service only when another receiving instruction requires it. The USCIS certified translation pillar covers the certification elements, and the certified versus notarized guide separates the two services.

How should you organize translated I-864 evidence?

  1. 1. Select the evidence

Use the current I-864 and related form instructions to decide which financial records belong in the filing.

  2. 2. Scan complete records

Include every submitted page, statement continuation, stamp, note, and text-bearing reverse side in readable order.

  3. 3. Provide identity spellings

Give the translator the passport spelling for each sponsor, household member, or immigrant named in the records.

  4. 4. Pair source and translation

Place each source record with its full English translation and signed certification, using clear file names or dividers.

  5. 5. Check figures and periods

Compare currencies, decimal separators, tax years, statement dates, page numbers, and totals against the source.

How much does I-864 supporting document translation cost?

Translatorus certified translation starts from €36 per source page, including the signed certification. Suppose the selected evidence contains a two-page employment letter, three pages of bank statements, and a four-page foreign tax assessment. The page count is 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 pages. At the starting rate, 9 pages × €36 = €324.

Standard 48-hour delivery is included. For the nine-page example, Fast 24-hour delivery starts at €324 + €15 = €339. Express 12-hour delivery starts at €324 + €30 = €354, subject to language, legibility, and volume. These figures cover translation service only. They exclude government, attorney, valuation, records-retrieval, apostille, notary, currency-conversion, and postal costs.

Which I-864 translation mistakes are avoidable?

Untranslated continuation pages

The first statement page is translated, while later pages carry balances, account details, or terms only in the source language.

Changed currency labels

A local-currency figure appears as dollars without a separate dated conversion or explanation.

Missing certification

The English text is present, but no signed statement covers completeness, accuracy, and translator competence.

Evidence chosen too early

A long foreign record is translated before the filer confirms that it belongs in the I-864 evidence set.

Translatorus has processed 4,866 orders as of July 30, 2026 and holds a 4.9/5 Trustpilot rating with 940+ reviews. These figures report service volume and customer feedback. They do not predict whether financial evidence will be accepted or whether a sponsor qualifies. Review the form instructions and obtain case-specific advice where needed.
