The death of a relative abroad, or of a foreign relative in the UK or the US, starts a series of procedures in which the death certificate is the first document requested: probate, survivor's pension, insurance, closing accounts, repatriation. Each of these bodies generally requires a certified translation when the certificate is not in its language.
Probate, pensions, repatriation: who asks for it
The solicitor or the probate registry handling an estate needs the translated certificate to establish entitlement to the assets. Pension providers ask for it for a survivor's benefit, insurers to pay out a death benefit, banks to close accounts. On the civil-status side, the General Register Office or a local register office may record a death abroad when presented with the translated local certificate. For repatriation of a body or ashes, consular authorities usually ask for the certificate, often with the medical certificate and the transport permit.
What the translation includes
The certificate gives the identity of the deceased, date and place of birth, residence, the date, time and place of death, the parents and spouse, then the informant and the registrar. The translator reproduces all of it, along with any notes of correction or registration added in the margin. Stamps, entry numbers and any apostille are described. Names are transliterated consistently with the other documents in the estate, so that a solicitor has no doubt about the identity of the deceased. The translation is certified, dated and numbered.
Which document to send
Request a recent full copy from the civil registry of the place of death, rather than a medical certificate or hospital letter, which are not civil-status records. Photograph both sides, since the apostille and registration notes are often on the back. Multilingual certificates from North Africa are translated in full. Two points to watch
Have the certificate apostilled or legalised before translation if the destination country requires it; an apostille added afterwards will not appear in the translation. For a survivor's pension, the provider generally also asks for the marriage certificate, so translating both together avoids a second wait.
