A criminal record certificate shows whether you have any convictions. It is requested in almost every immigration, citizenship and regulated-job process. Issued in the language of its country, it is read abroad only with a certified translation, and the reverse is true for a British or American record shown overseas.
The files that ask for it
The Home Office (UKVI) asks for an overseas criminal record certificate, with a translation, for some visas and for indefinite leave in certain routes. Applications for naturalisation, adoption, teaching, social care, medical registration and taxi licensing rely on it too, as do employers in security, health or childcare. In the United States, USCIS and immigration lawyers regularly request a police clearance certificate with a certified translation. A UK ACRO police certificate or a DBS result may in turn need translating for work or residence abroad.
What the certified translation covers
The translator reproduces the issuing authority, the full identity of the applicant, the date of issue, the reference number and, above all, the key entry: either a statement that no record exists or the list of convictions with dates, courts and sentences. Online verification notes, codes and stamps are described so the receiving office can check authenticity. Names are transliterated as in the passport, which matters doubly here, since a spelling difference could suggest the record belongs to someone else. The translator's stamp and signature close the document.
What to send, country by country
Send every side: the apostille or legalisation is often on the back or on a stapled sheet. If the certificate was issued as an electronically signed file, send that file rather than a screenshot. Names vary widely, such as police clearance certificate in India, certificate of good conduct in many Asian and Gulf countries, or extract from the criminal register in Poland and Romania. Do not crop the photo around the text; margin stamps are part of the document.
