A foreign driving licence does not explain itself: categories, issue dates, restrictions and codes differ from country to country. To exchange it for a UK licence, hire a car, or insure a vehicle, a certified translation is usually requested. We translate recent plastic cards and older paper licences alike.
Exchanging a licence and other situations
In the UK, the DVLA decides whether a licence from outside Great Britain can be exchanged, and it may ask for a translation if the licence is not in English. Car rental firms, insurers who want to know how long you have held a licence, employers hiring drivers and courts after an accident can all ask for one as well. In the United States, a state DMV may require a translation when you apply for a licence with a foreign one, though rules vary by state. Check the current requirement with the issuing office.
What the translation of a licence contains
Each numbered field is rendered: surname, given names, date and place of birth, issuing authority and dates of issue and expiry, licence number, vehicle categories with their own dates, and restriction codes such as glasses or automatic gearbox. The category date is what an authority looks at first, because it decides whether you may drive a lorry or carry passengers. Front and back are combined on one page in the same order as the original, with your name transliterated as in your passport, and the translator's stamp.
Photos to provide and local differences
Send both sides, sharp and free of glare. A laminated card shines, so photograph it slightly off-angle in shade. An old paper licence folded in three counts several faces: unfold it and photograph each written panel. Moroccan, Pakistani or Indian licences may carry text in more than one language, and an office will usually still want the non-English side translated. An international driving permit does not replace a certified translation in every case. An expired licence can be translated, but an exchange will usually be refused.

A licence, front and back, counts as one page, so it costs €30. With a certificate of authenticity from the country of issue, expect two pages and €60. The PDF arrives by e-mail within 24 to 48 hours, in 24 hours with Fast 24h (+€15) or in 12 hours with Express 12h (+€30). Most offices accept the digital version. If a counter insists on paper, add PDF + original by post for €8.
Frequent errors
Sending only the front, forgetting to translate a statement of driving entitlement, or applying after a deadline are the commonest reasons for refusal. If your name changed after marriage, include the certificate that explains it.

How many pages does a driving licence come to?
A driving licence, whether the plastic card format or the older paper version, fits on a single page translating both sides. It's one of the shortest documents to translate, which doesn't affect the base rate.
Do I need to send the original licence, or is a photo enough?
A clear photo of the front and back is enough for the translation. Keep the original: the DVLA, or the DMV in the United States, will ask you to present it together with the certified translation when exchanging the licence.
Do non-European licences or different formats cause any problems?
Licences issued outside the European Union, often in a different format or layout, are translated without difficulty by our translators, who are used to these documents. An international licence accompanying the national one can also be translated as part of the same order.
