A foreign ID card is the most common proof of identity for opening an account, enrolling or signing a contract when you do not have a passport at hand. Written in another language or script, it cannot join a file in English without a certified translation. Our translators handle cards of every generation, from laminated paper to chip cards.
Where a translated ID card is requested
Banks and lenders ask for it when opening an account or granting a loan, universities for enrolment, landlords and letting agents for a tenancy, solicitors for a sale or an estate, register offices for a marriage or civil partnership. Embassies often want it for a registration or a visa request. Abroad, a British driving licence or a US state ID, translated, sometimes stands in for a passport with an employer, a landlord or a local authority.
What the translation contains
Front and back are translated on the same page: surname, given names, sex, date and place of birth, nationality, card number, national identification number when there is one, dates of issue and expiry, issuing authority, and address or parents' names in countries that print them. Names in Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek or Chinese characters are transliterated according to the Latin form on the card or, failing that, on the passport. The chip and the machine-readable zone are flagged but not translated. The certified translator stamps the page.
Photos and special cases
Send front and back, even if the back looks empty; it often carries the expiry date, the address or the reading zone. Frame the whole card, flat, with sharp small print. Polish, Romanian, Turkish, Pakistani or Indian cards each have their own layout, which our translators know well. An expired card can be translated, but an organisation will normally refuse it as proof of identity.
Price and turnaround for an ID card
An identity card, front and back together, counts as one page and costs €30. If the form detects two pages because you uploaded two photos, set the number back to one. The translation is e-mailed within 24 to 48 hours. For a bank appointment or a signing coming up, choose Fast 24h (+€15) or Express 12h (+€30). When you have both, most organisations prefer the passport, which is recognised everywhere. The ID card stays useful when the passport is being renewed, held at an embassy or left at home. If in doubt, ask the organisation which document it expects.

Which authority accepts this translation?

Do you need the original card, or is a photo enough?
A clear, complete photo of the front and one of the back are all we need for the translation. Keep your ID card with you — there's no need to send it physically.
Does a foreign ID card written in a non-Latin script cause any problems?
A card written in Arabic, Cyrillic or another non-Latin script is translated as normal by our translators, who are used to these documents. The transliteration of proper names follows official rules to stay consistent with your passport or French civil status records.
