An employment contract proves a job, a salary and a duration. It is requested for a work visa, a sponsored residence permit, a secondment, a loan or a dispute, and then has to be read by an authority that does not speak the language it was signed in. For a Skilled Worker visa, the Home Office (UKVI) expects documents in English or accompanied by a certified translation, and a contract or job offer in another language may be requested. In the United States, USCIS can ask for a translated offer letter or contract in an employment-based petition. Banks and mortgage lenders request it for a home loan. Abroad, a British or American contract, translated, supports a work permit or an intra-group transfer, and before a foreign court it is the core exhibit of the file.
The clauses the translation reproduces
The translator restores the identity of the parties, job title, grade, start date, duration (permanent, fixed-term, seasonal), probation period, workplace, fixed and variable pay, holidays and notice. Non-compete, mobility and confidentiality clauses are translated in full, because these are the ones a court examines. Signatures, initials, stamps and date are described page by page. Notions specific to local law, such as a collective agreement, managerial status or gross and net pay, are rendered by the closest equivalent, with a bracketed note if needed, and each page is certified.
What to send
Send the contract signed by both parties, every page and in order. An unsigned draft carries less weight. If an authority accepts a job offer, translate that instead; it often fits on one page. Add any amendments that change the pay or the duration, and the useful annexes. Technical annexes and staff handbooks are usually not needed. If the contract already exists in a bilingual version, only the foreign-language part needs translating.
