A certificate of employment, also called an employer's letter, confirms that a person holds or held a post in a company, with dates and duties. Immigration offices, banks, landlords and embassies ask for it to check a work situation. Written on a foreign employer's letterhead, it counts here only with a certified translation, and the reverse is equally true.
Residence, loans, tenancies, pensions: when it is asked for
The Home Office (UKVI) and USCIS ask for a recent employer's letter for a work visa, an extension or a change of status. Banks request it, with payslips, for a loan or mortgage, and letting agents and landlords for a tenancy application. An embassy may ask for it for a short-stay visa, to check that the applicant has a job and will return. Pension providers use it to reconstruct a career spent partly abroad. A British or American employer's letter, translated, serves for a secondment, a work permit or a rental overseas.

An employer's letter describes a current job; a certificate of employment given at the end of a contract describes a finished one; a salary certificate and a payslip detail pay. The authority usually says which it wants. A letter without a stamp or signature is often refused, so ask the employer for a complete version.
