A tax assessment notice sums up what you declared to the tax authority for one year and what you owe, or do not owe. It is often the proof of income that authorities prefer, because it comes from the state and not from the employer. When it has to be shown outside the country that issued it, or when a foreign tax document arrives in France, a certified translation makes it readable and acceptable.
Files that call for a tax document
In France, the prefecture asks for the notices of recent years for a residence card, naturalisation or family reunification. A foreign national who worked in their home country then supplies the equivalent tax document, translated: an income tax return, a certificate from the tax office or a statement of non-taxation.
Abroad, the French notice, once translated, supports an application for permanent residence, a scholarship based on parental income, a mortgage, or the proof of tax residence a bank may ask for. Common comparisons are an HMRC tax calculation in the UK or an IRS transcript in the United States.
What the translation covers
The first page holds the essentials: identity of the taxpayers, address, income year, number of tax shares, gross income, reference tax income, net tax and the amount still due or refunded. The translator renders each line and explains in square brackets any notion with no direct equivalent, such as the family quotient.
The detail pages, with the boxes of the return and their codes, are translated as a table. The tax number, the notice reference and the mentions of the tax office are kept, so a foreign officer can check the authenticity of the document.
File to send and precautions
Download the notice from your personal space on the French tax website: the official PDF carries a reference some authorities check online. A photo of the paper copy received by post is accepted if every page is sharp.
Watch the year: a notice issued in 2026 relates to income of 2025. If the body asks for a specific year, choose the matching notice. For a couple, the joint notice is enough; there is no need to translate the same income twice.
How many pages and what price
A French tax notice generally runs to two to four pages, that is €60 to €120 at €30 a page. A non-taxation certificate or a one-page statement of tax situation costs €30. For two or three years, simply multiply by the number of notices.
Allow 24 to 48 hours to receive the certified file by e-mail; the Fast (24 h, +€15) and Express (12 h, +€30) options shorten that, and the certified paper copy is posted for €8.
Good to know
When the authority only needs the reference tax income, the shorter statement of tax situation is often accepted in place of the full notice. Ask before ordering: you save pages without losing any value as evidence.

I have been using this translator's services via WhatsApp for about a year or two now, and I have never been disappointed. Questions about translating your tax assessment notice
Why a tax notice rather than payslips?
Because it is issued by the tax authority and summarises a whole year of income from every source: salary, rental income, pensions. Many immigration offices and consulates find it more convincing than a series of payslips. Depending on the file you may be asked for one, the other or both; the official list of documents is what counts.
Must every page of the notice be translated?
In general yes, because the officer handling the file wants a complete, paginated document like the original. Pages that only give general payment information can sometimes be left out, but only if the receiving body accepts it. In that case, state the pages you want in the Additional information field.
How is the reference tax income translated?
The translator uses the closest expression in the target language and adds a short explanation in square brackets: an amount calculated by the French tax authority to decide access to certain benefits and exemptions. The figure itself is reproduced unchanged, in the currency of the notice, so a foreign authority can use it directly.
I was not taxable: what do I translate?
A notice of non-taxation is translated exactly like a tax assessment: it proves the income you declared even when the tax is nil. It is the document most often requested, rather than a simple statement. If the body accepts the shorter statement of tax situation, the number of pages to translate falls accordingly.
