Judgment, appeal ruling, order: a decision handed down by the court of one country is known to another state only if it is presented in its official language. Child custody, adoption, an order to pay a sum, an injunction, a commercial dispute: a certified translation is the first step in having the decision recognised or enforced elsewhere. For a divorce, see our page on the divorce judgment instead.
Having a decision recognised or enforced abroad
A French decision setting a child's residence or visiting rights often has to be translated to apply in the country where the other parent lives. An adoption judgment issued abroad is presented translated to the French court to obtain its registration or recognition.
In civil and commercial matters, a debt recognised by a court can be collected in another country only through the procedure laid down by that country or by a European regulation, which almost always requires the decision to be translated, sometimes the attached certificate too.
A translation that respects the structure of the judgment
The translator follows the decision in order: court, chamber, case number, date, composition of the bench, parties and lawyers, summary of the dispute, reasoning, then operative part. The latter gets particular attention, since it is what will be enforced: every amount, deadline and obligation is rendered unambiguously.
Concepts specific to the law of origin receive the recognised equivalent in the target language, with a note in square brackets when they do not exist elsewhere. The enforcement formula, certificates of no appeal and registry stamps are translated with the decision.
Documents to gather
Send the full copy issued by the court registry, all pages included, not a mere extract. If the decision was served, attach the notice of service; if it is final, the certificate of no appeal. The authority recognising the decision often requests these documents together.
A partly illegible or hand-annotated copy can delay the file: ask the registry for a fresh copy rather than having a degraded version translated.
Price of a translated court decision
Count €30 per page. An order often takes one to three pages (€30 to €90), a first-instance judgment five to fifteen pages (€150 to €450); an appeal ruling can be longer.
Decisions of about ten pages are delivered by e-mail in 24 to 48 hours; for longer ones the date is confirmed before work begins. Fast (24 h, +€15) and Express (12 h, +€30) remain possible, and the paper copy, which most courts require, is posted for €8.
Advice before starting proceedings
Ask the lawyer or the receiving authority whether an apostille is required and on which version: it is attached to the original, then translated with it. Also check the expected language, since some multilingual countries require that of the court's region.

I have been using this translator's services via WhatsApp for about a year or two now, and I have never been disappointed. The process is simple: I send the document, I pay by card, and the translation follows quickly. The work is always serious, professional, and reliable. Questions about translating your court judgment
My judgment concerns a divorce: is this the right page?
For a divorce judgment, including its provisions on custody and maintenance, the page on translating a divorce judgment gives more precise guidance. This page covers other decisions: custody outside divorce, adoption, recognition and enforcement, commercial disputes, orders or criminal convictions. The price per page is the same.
Must the reasoning be translated or only the operative part?
Most authorities that recognise a foreign decision ask for the full translation, reasoning included, to check that the procedure was fair. Some accept a translation of the operative part alone for limited uses. Get this confirmed in writing and state the pages wanted in the Additional information field.
Do you translate adoption decisions?
Yes. A foreign adoption judgment is translated in full, with the identity of the child and the adopters, the type of adoption, full or simple according to the law of origin, and the mentions that it is final. This translation accompanies the application for recognition or enforcement, then registration with the civil registry.
Is the translation enough to enforce the decision abroad?
No, it is only one condition among others. Enforcement generally goes through a procedure specific to the destination country or a European certificate, sometimes with an apostille or legalisation. A certified translation makes the decision understandable; the local lawyer or court conducts the recognition.
