A family record book gathers in one booklet the marriage entry, the birth entries of the children and, where relevant, deaths. Authorities that must check the make-up of a family, for benefits, schooling or a residence permit, generally ask for a certified translation of the completed pages.
Benefits, school, residence: who is concerned
The Home Office (UKVI) accepts family documents translated for a family visa or a child's application. Schools and local authorities ask for them for admission, benefit offices to establish a household, and embassies for a registration. Abroad, a family record book from countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Senegal or Turkey is used to enrol children, obtain residence for an expatriate employee's family or prove parentage. As many countries have no such booklet, the translator often adds a note explaining what the document is.
What the translator translates, and what stays out
The completed pages are translated in full: the spouses' page, each child's page with name, date and place of birth, notes of death, divorce or adoption, update stamps and the booklet number. Pages of legal information printed identically in every booklet are not translated, and the translator says so. The children's names follow the spelling in the birth certificate or passport. Each translated page states which page of the booklet it matches and carries the translator's certification.
Which pages to photograph
Photograph only the written pages, one per photo, in booklet order: spouses first, then each child. There is no need to send the cover or blank pages. Lay the booklet flat so the binding does not hide the start of the lines. Be aware that an authority often asks for the birth certificate itself rather than the booklet page, in particular for citizenship or a visa.

Each completed page costs €30. A couple with two children usually has three pages to translate, or €90; a booklet with four children has five. The form counts one page per photo uploaded. When the booklet is not enough
The booklet is a collection of extracts. It does not replace a full copy of an entry when one is demanded, notably for citizenship or registration. In that case, request the entry from the civil registry concerned and have it translated in addition to the booklet pages.

Which authority accepts this translation?
The Home Office (UKVI) requires it for a citizenship or visa application, and the General Register Office or your local register office for a marriage or the registration of a birth, marriage or death that took place abroad; in the United States, USCIS requires it for any immigration filing. A clear photo of each relevant page is enough — there's no need to send the physical booklet. The original stays with you for your other procedures while the translation is being carried out.
Do I need to have the whole booklet translated, or just certain pages?
You can have only the pages relevant to your application translated, for example the parents' page and the page for the child concerned, without translating any blank pages. This keeps the number of billed pages down while covering exactly what the authority asks for.
